Ceramic Coating Prep: The Work That Makes a Coating Last

A ceramic coating is a semi-permanent layer that bonds to whatever surface you put it on. That last part is the whole guide: if the paint has embedded iron, road film or polishing oils on it, the coating bonds to the contamination rather than the clear coat — and it will fail early, unevenly, and usually where it shows most.

Prep is the majority of a coating job. The coating itself takes an hour. The prep takes a day, and it is what you are actually paying for when a shop quotes a coating.

Why coatings fail

Almost every premature coating failure traces back to one of three things: contamination left on the surface, polishing oils not removed before application, or the coating applied over a surface that was never fully corrected. A coating locks in whatever is underneath it. Swirls under a coating are swirls for the next three years.

What you need

  • An iron and fallout remover to dissolve embedded brake dust and rail dust chemically.
  • Clay — a bar, mitt or towel — plus plenty of lubricant, for the bonded contamination a chemical cannot lift.

  • A dedicated panel wipe or surface prep — the step that removes polishing oils. Isopropyl mixes are a common substitute but a purpose-made prep is more consistent.
  • Suede or microfiber coating applicators, plus clean levelling towels you have not used for anything else.
  • Strong lighting to spot high spots before they cure.

The prep sequence

1. Wash thoroughly

A full two-bucket wash with a neutral shampoo. Some detailers use a stripping wash here to remove any existing wax or sealant — sensible, since you want the coating meeting bare clear coat.

2. Iron decontamination

Spray iron remover onto cool, dry paint and let it dwell. It will turn purple as it reacts with embedded ferrous particles — that colour is the product working, not a gimmick. Agitate gently on heavy areas, then rinse thoroughly. Do not let it dry on the surface.

Pay particular attention to the lower third of the car and the rear, where brake dust and rail dust collect.

3. Clay the paint

With generous lubricant, glide clay across the surface in straight lines. It will feel gritty at first and go silent when the section is clean. Fold the clay often and drop it and bin it if it hits the ground — a dropped clay bar is a scratching tool.

Check your work by putting your hand in a thin plastic bag and running it over the paint. The bag amplifies texture and you will feel contamination your bare fingers miss.

4. Correct the paint

Whatever defects are present now are the defects you are sealing in. This is where the majority of the labour goes. Even a light one-step polish makes a visible difference under a coating, because the coating adds gloss and clarity that shows off whatever is beneath.

5. Panel wipe — do not skip this

Every polish contains oils and fillers that make paint look finished. They also sit exactly where you need the coating to bond. Wipe every panel with a dedicated prep solution and a clean towel, then flip to a fresh side and wipe again.

This is the step that separates a coating that lasts from one that sheds in patches after a winter. If you do nothing else on this list properly, do this.

6. Apply the coating

Work in a shaded, dust-free space, ideally between 60–75°F. Apply to one panel at a time in a crosshatch pattern, using only as much product as the applicator needs to glide.

Then watch it. The coating will flash — the appearance shifts as solvents evaporate — and that is your signal to level it with a clean towel. Flash time varies by product and temperature, from under a minute to several.

7. Inspect for high spots

Move your light around each panel immediately after levelling. A high spot is unlevelled excess and it looks like a rainbow smear or an oily patch. Caught within a few minutes it wipes off. Left to cure it needs polishing off. This is why lighting is on the equipment list.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the panel wipe. The single biggest cause of coating failure.
  • Coating in the sun or on hot panels. Flash time collapses and you will be chasing high spots you cannot reach in time.
  • Too much product. More coating is not more protection. It is more high spots.
  • Reusing levelling towels. A towel with cured coating in it drags hardened residue across fresh coating.
  • Getting it wet too early. Most coatings need 24 hours before water contact and a full cure over several days.
  • Claying without lubricant. Clay needs to float. Dry clay marrs paint immediately.

Aftercare

Wait at least a week before the first wash. From then on, a neutral shampoo and the two-bucket method is all it needs — avoid harsh alkaline cleaners on coated paint. A silica-based topper every few months tops up hydrophobics and extends the life of the base layer considerably.

Frequently asked questions

How long does prep actually take? On an average car in decent condition, a full day. Decon and clay is two to three hours, correction is four or more, panel wipe is an hour done properly.

Can I coat over an existing coating? Not effectively. The old layer must come off — usually by polishing — or the new one has nothing to bond to.

Is a spray coating worth it instead? For a daily driver, a good silica spray gives you a solid share of the benefit for a fraction of the labour, and it forgives imperfect prep. A full coating is the right call when the paint is already corrected and you want multi-year durability.

What if I find a high spot the next day? Light polishing with a fine polish on a soft pad will take it off. Address it before it fully cures over several days.
