Paint Correction for Beginners: Compound, Polish and Pad Selection
Paint correction is the process of levelling the clear coat to remove the defects sitting in it — swirls, wash marring, light scratches, oxidation and water spot etching. You are not adding gloss. You are removing the damage that was scattering light and revealing the gloss that was always underneath.
That framing matters, because it explains the one hard limit: you have a finite amount of clear coat, and every correction spends some of it.
What correction can and cannot fix
Run a fingernail lightly across the defect. If it catches, the scratch is through the clear and no amount of polishing will remove it — polishing can only soften its edges. If your nail glides over it, it is almost certainly correctable.
Most of what makes a black car look tired is swirl marks and wash marring, and both live in the top few microns. That is the easy win.
What you need
- A dual-action polisher. A DA's random orbit makes it very difficult to burn paint, which is why it is the right tool to learn on. A rotary cuts faster and punishes mistakes far harder.
- A compound and a polish. Compound cuts and leaves haze; polish refines that haze to gloss. Some one-step products do both adequately.
- Pads in at least two grades. A medium-cut foam for the compounding stage, a fine or ultra-fine foam for finishing. Microfiber pads cut noticeably harder than foam if you need more bite.
- A panel wipe to strip polishing oils so you can see your actual result rather than filled defects.
- Good lighting. You cannot correct what you cannot see. A single inspection light will teach you more than any product upgrade.
The process, step by step
1. Wash and decontaminate first
Any grit left on the paint gets picked up by the pad and dragged across the panel at speed. Wash, clay, and iron-remove before a machine touches the car. This is non-negotiable.
2. Do a test spot
Pick one two-foot-square section. Start with the least aggressive combination you think might work — fine pad and polish. Check the result. If it is not enough, step up to a medium pad, then a cutting compound. You are looking for the mildest combination that fully corrects, because that is the one that spends the least clear coat.
Never start with your heaviest cut just to be sure. You cannot put clear coat back.
3. Prime the pad and set your speed
Spread four or five pea-sized drops across the pad. Dab the product around the section at low speed with the machine off the trigger, then work at speed 4 to 5 on a DA. Keep the pad flat — tilting concentrates pressure on an edge and generates heat.
4. Work in slow, overlapping passes
Move roughly one inch per second, with 50% overlap, in a crosshatch pattern — left to right, then up and down. Four to six passes per section. Slow arm speed is what does the work; pushing harder mostly just stops the pad rotating.
Watch the product. It goes from opaque to nearly clear as the abrasives break down. That transition is your cue to stop.
5. Wipe and inspect under light
Remove residue with a clean towel, then wipe the section with panel prep. Polishing oils fill fine scratches and will happily convince you the panel is finished when it is not. Inspect under your light at several angles.
6. Refine, then protect
If you compounded, follow with a finishing polish on a soft pad to remove the haze the compound left. Then protect immediately — freshly corrected paint is completely bare, with nothing on it at all. A wax, sealant or ceramic coating should go on the same day.
Common mistakes
- Starting too aggressive. The most common and most expensive error. Test spot first, always.
- Working on edges and body lines at full pressure. Clear coat is thinnest there and it is where people burn through. Tape them off or ease right back.
- Moving too fast. Fast arm speed feels productive and corrects almost nothing.
- Dirty pads. A saturated pad stops cutting and starts smearing. Clean it every couple of sections and swap it out entirely every panel or two.
- Judging results before a panel wipe. You are looking at oils, not paint.
- Correcting without protecting afterwards. Bare clear coat is vulnerable from the moment you finish.
How much correction is enough
Chasing 100% correction on a daily driver is usually the wrong call. Getting from 60% to 95% costs a lot of clear coat and most of that final gain is only visible under direct inspection light. Aim for a car that looks excellent in sunlight and keep the rest of your clear coat for the future.
Frequently asked questions
How often can a car be corrected? Sparingly. Factory clear is typically 40–60 microns and a meaningful correction removes a few of those. Two or three full corrections in a car's life is a reasonable ceiling.
DA or rotary? DA for anyone learning. The random orbit is a genuine safety mechanism.
Do I need a paint depth gauge? Not for a stock daily driver worked with a DA. It becomes important on repainted panels, resprays and anything valuable, where you have no idea what is under you.
Can I correct in the sun? No. Hot panels flash the product off before the abrasives break down properly, and you will fight the whole way.
